ECG and Smart Freight Centre issue the first harmonised methodology, in line with ISO 14083, to calculate Ro-Ro GHG emissions
The methodology is the result of a project where Ro-Ro operators co-operated for 6 months led by Smart Freight Centre
This is part of a wider multimodal project to harmonise emissions accounting from automotive supply chains led by ECG and VDA
ECG - The Association of European Vehicle Logistics and Smart Freight Centre are pleased to announce the publication of the first harmonised methodology to account for GHG emissions from Ro-Ro operations.
The methodology is aligned with existing international standards regarding carbon accounting for the logistics industry namely the Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC) Framework and ISO 14083.
The project, supported by Smart Freight Centre, was initiated by ECG in February 2023. Members of ECG operating in the Ro-Ro sector contributed their expertise and experience regarding input for harmonising emissions accounting. The methodology will allow shipping lines to have a reference guidance which will support them and car manufacturers in their decarbonisation journey.
“There was no standard methodology for Ro-Ro operators before and everyone has been doing things differently. We have now reached a key milestone which will allow our Ro-Ro members to use a single methodology to calculate and report emissions,” said Mike Sturgeon, ECG Executive Director.
“A unified and transparent GHG accounting and reporting methodology within the Ro-Ro sector is expected to trigger an increase of reporting and to lay a foundation for a more structured collaboration on GHG emission reduction initiatives,” commented Christoph Wolff, CEO Smart Freight Centre.
This project is part of a wider effort towards harmonisation of emissions accounting in automotive supply chains in alignment with ISO 14083. ECG, VDA – the German Association of the Automotive Industry and other European car manufacturers have been working since the beginning of 2023 to develop a methodology for inbound and outbound automotive logistics emissions. The results are expected in Q3 2023.
