In a letter to the city council, Deputy Mayor Alderman Melanie van der Horst, who is also responsible for traffic, transport and air quality, announced the upcoming ban on polluting traffic, reports NL Times.
The new zero-emission zones will cover areas within the A10 ring road, which is commonly used by hauliers to transport goods in and out of the city. Petrol and diesel vehicles will be banned from these areas from 2025.
The municipality of Amsterdam recognises that this regulation may pose challenges for hauliers and acknowledges the potential financial burdens and logistical concerns associated with the transition to zero-emission vehicles. However, it emphasises the urgency of this transition to protect public health and ensure compliance with the World Health Organisation’s air quality standards, which will come into force in 2030.
To help hauliers make this transition, Amsterdam plans to offer a number of support programmes. Companies operating in the city can expect exemptions, scrappage subsidies for older vehicles and access to resources to facilitate the introduction of zero-emission trucks.
In addition, the city will provide guidance and information on available financial incentives to ease the financial burden of upgrading their fleets.
