Trabzon-Novorossiysk Ro-Ro line launches after Sochi ferry setbacks

Trabzon-Novorossiysk Ro-Ro line launches after Sochi ferry setbacks

Ports Europe — 2026-07-13

Maritime and Ports

A new Ro-Ro freight line between Trabzon and Russia’s Black Sea port of Novorossiysk launched on July 12, operated by international logistics firm Geo Grand Line Global. The service uses the ferry Şampiyon Trabzonspor, with capacity for 49 standard trucks and 30 smaller vehicles.

Trabzon sits on Turkey’s northeastern Black Sea coast, while Novorossiysk lies roughly 445 kilometres (275 miles) to the north, on Russia’s southwestern Black Sea shore near the Kerch Strait and Crimea. The route crosses open water rather than hugging the coast, making it noticeably longer than the shorter, more easterly Trabzon-Sochi crossing that preceded it.

First sailings and schedule

The inaugural departure left Trabzon Port at 14:00 on July 12, with return sailings from Novorossiysk beginning July 14. Geo Grand Line Global officials Merab Ungiadze and İlyas Bulut told the Trabzon Chamber of Commerce and Industry that departures from Trabzon would continue every four days through July, on the 16th, 20th, 24th and 28th, to keep freight movements running without interruption.

Pricing and border procedures

Published rates vary by vehicle length: standard trucks of 13.70 to 17.00 metres are charged $2,600 outbound and $1,400 on return, mega-trucks of 18.01 to 19.90 metres $3,100 and $1,600, and truck trailers of 13.01 to 13.60 metres $2,400 and $1,300. Both ports will apply what organisers called a Green Corridor Guarantee, intended to reduce cargo documentation delays and speed up border processing for trucking firms using the route.

A workaround for last year’s Sochi disruption

Lider Line operations official İlyas Bulut said the Novorossiysk route was launched partly because of disruption on the previous Trabzon-Sochi passenger service, on which Russian authorities blocked a ferry from docking last November after it had waited offshore for several days. Bulut said the new freight-focused line to Novorossiysk was intended to keep trade moving between the two countries after those setbacks. Trabzon Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Erkut Çelebi said the route had been under discussion for some time and was expected to lower export costs and strengthen trade ties between Turkey and Russia.
