Spain, Hungary, and Italy are set to raise their toll rates, and the specific increases in these countries have now been revealed.

Spain

The Spanish Ministry of Transport has announced a three-stage indexation of motorway toll rates. Starting on 1 January 2025, there will be a 4.64% increase, equivalent to 60% of 2024’s inflation rate.

This increase applies to both concession motorways and those managed by the State Society for Land Transport Infrastructure (Seitt).

• Seitt-managed motorways:
  • Vehicles without an electronic toll device will face a 2% increase.
  • Vehicles equipped with an electronic toll device will see a 5% increase.
  • These sections remain free of charge from 00:00 to 06:00 daily throughout the year.
  • Key sections include R-3/R-5, R-2, R-4, M-12, AP-7 Alicante-Cartagena, AP-36 Ocaña-La Roda, and AP-41 Madrid-Toledo.
• Concession motorways:
  The higher rates are primarily due to an increase in the consumer price index (CPI). The approved percentage increases are as follows:
  • AP-9: 5.34%
  • AP-6, AP-51, AP-61: 3.89%
  • AP-46 and AP-7 Alicante-Cartagena: 5.45%
  • AP-53 and AP-71: 3.89%
  • AP-66: 3.84%

The toll indexation will follow two additional stages:

• 16 January 2025: The CPI percentage for 2024 will be applied, with figures confirmed in early January.
• 1 April 2025: The remaining 3.71% of the 2023 CPI will be added, completing the Ministry of Transport’s proposed indexation cycle.

Italy

In Italy, motorway toll rates will also rise in 2025. The Italian Ministry of Transport has announced an average increase of 1.8%, reflecting the inflation rate forecast for the current year.

The increases primarily affect routes managed by Aspi, although some deviations from the average are noted:

• The A3 Naples-Salerno motorway will see a slightly smaller increase of 1.677%.
• Other affected motorways include:

  • A4 Milan Fiorenza-Brescia Ovest
  • A7 Serravalle Scrivia-Genoa Ovest
  • A8 Milano-Laghi (Milan-Varese)
  • A8/A26 Gallarate-Gattico

  • A11 Firenze-Mare (Florence-Pisa Nord)
  • A12 Genoa-Sestri Levante and Civitavecchia-Rome
  • A13 Bologna-Padua
  • A14 Adriatica
  • A16 Autostrada dei Due Mari (Naples East-Canosa di Puglia)
  • A23 Alpe-Adria (Udine Nord-Austrian border)
  • A26 Autostrada dei Trafori (Genoa Voltri-Innesto)
  • A27 A57-Pian di Vedoia
  • A30 Caserta-Salerno

Despite the overall increase, the Ministry has frozen toll rates for 22 out of 23 motorway concessionaires, leaving important routes such as the A6 Turin-Savona and A33 Asti-Cuneo unaffected.

Hungary

Hungary has also implemented toll increases as of the beginning of this year. The infrastructure charge included in the electronic tolling system has risen by 3.4%, corresponding to last August’s inflation rate. The external cost charge remains unchanged.
