On 1st July, Dimitri Sérafimoff, CLECAT President, took part in the high level strategic dialogue with Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas, alongside other key European stakeholders, to discuss the future EU Ports Strategy. Emphasising the critical role of ports as central nodes in the logistics network, he emphasised the need for open and fair access to port services, seamless hinterland connections, and a policy framework that champions digitalisation and sustainability.
Mr Sérafimoff highlighted ongoing challenges in Northern Europe, including severe congestion and a lack of real-time communication, which are undermining European competitiveness. CLECAT has previously called for a comprehensive EU Ports Strategy to enhance resilience, efficiency, and fair access for all logistics actors. During the dialogue, key recommendations were put forward to support the competitiveness of EU ports and ensure future-ready skills and working conditions. A structured approach to port digitalisation was mentioned, focusing on enhanced data sharing and system interoperability across port actors, customs, and logistics platforms. Additionally, CLECAT supported the establishment of a robust EU State Aid Framework for ports to strengthen competitiveness and manage the green transition effectively.
The discussion also covered the energy transition and sustainability of ports, with Mr Sérafimoff expressing support for Europe's ambitious climate targets while advocating for pragmatic conditions to manage this transition. Avoiding carbon leakage and safeguarding EU competitiveness were highlighted as crucial, with a focus on accelerating the availability of renewable fuels and clean energy infrastructure. The dialogue concluded with a call for increased port security and network resilience, emphasising the need for interoperability, streamlined procedures, and operational coordination, particularly at customs and border crossing points.
