The European Parliament rapporteur’s report on the review of the CO2 regulation for cars and vans, published today, marks an important step towards a more balanced and realistic framework that better reflects real-world conditions and the significant challenges facing the automotive sector.
The report acknowledges the importance of targeted flexibilities and a technology-neutral, more market-oriented approach to decarbonisation, which will be essential to support the sector’s transition while maintaining industrial competitiveness and investment capacity. It also addresses the specific challenges affecting the van segment, where electrification continues to face considerable operational and affordability constraints.
Sigrid de Vries, director general of ACEA, stated: “This transformation is unfolding in a context of intensifying geopolitical uncertainty, an uneven build-out of charging infrastructure, and consumers that need time and confidence to make the shift. The success of the transition will depend on whether Europe can align political ambition with market and industrial reality.”
