Fundación Valenciaport has kicked off a research study on the safety of ammonia as fuel, titled ‘Study Investigating the Safety of Ammonia as Fuel on Ships’.
According to Valenciaport, the study is set to create the groundwork for the use of ammonia as a ship fuel.
The project aims to standardise the port logistics industry by providing a framework for methodology, safety assessments, reliability analyses, and technical guidance documents.
The project will reportedly concentrate on characterising ammonia as a chemical and fuel, evaluating available standards, rules, practices, and factors to consider while ensuring the safety of ships utilising ammonia as a fuel.
Furthermore, the project will conduct a safety evaluation and reliability study of particular equipment and systems; it will also evaluate the safety of a generic ship design and two specific ship types, taking into consideration specialist technical solutions. Finally, a target-based guide for ammonia-fuelled ships will be developed.
The project, supervised by ABS HELLENIC S.M., has a budget of around €450,000 ($486,000), is co-financed by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), and will continue until June 2025.
