Yanmar launches hydrogen fuel tech for ships

Port Technology — 2023-08-04

Maritime and Ports

Yanmar Power Technology Co., Ltd. (YPT), a subsidiary of Yanmar Holdings, has successfully commercialised a maritime hydrogen fuel cell system in an effort towards decarbonisation.

The organisation intends to propose that this technology be installed on a variety of ships, including passenger ships, work ships, and cargo ships operating in coastal locations where hydrogen refuelling is reasonably easy.

In line with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) revised target of achieving zero net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by around 2050, the maritime sector is pursuing decarbonisation efforts.

YPT has actively participated in the activities of Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism (MLIT) to produce safety rules for hydrogen fuel cell ships and a roadmap for hydrogen utilisation in the maritime sector.

YPT has also contributed in a number of efforts, including navigational testing of demonstration ships outfitted with hydrogen fuel cells and high-pressure hydrogen refuelling experiments for ships.

Yanmar aims to provide total solutions for ship decarbonisation and digitalisation by leveraging its expertise and experience in the marine engine business, with comprehensive designs covering the entire powertrain of fuel cell ships, including power storage, power management, propulsion, hydrogen storage systems, and more.

This complete system will aid in the ship’s decarbonisation and digitalisation. As part of its YANMAR GREEN CHALLENGE 2050 project, the Yanmar Group aspires to realise a sustainable society while tackling GHG reduction and minimising environmental impact.

In July 2023, the Council of the European Union (EU) officially approved the conclusive regulations for climate-neutral shipping, as outlined in the FuelEU maritime proposal.
