Germany has approved the nationwide use of ERNA, a digital driver assistant developed by ESTA member Sommer, marking a significant step forward in the digitization of the heavy transport industry.
ERNA, which provides real-time route guidance, driving restrictions, and rest area information, has been adopted as a tool to enhance road safety and reduce administrative burdens for truck drivers. The system has been certified and is available in 13 languages.
Previously, the use of ERNA was limited to pilot projects in specific German states. The federal government’s decision to approve its nationwide use is expected to streamline transport operations and improve efficiency.
The German Ministry for Digital and Transport has highlighted the potential of voice assistants to reduce driving errors and lower costs for the heavy goods transport sector.
ERNA’s widespread adoption is seen as a major step towards the wider adoption of standardized electronic permitting and driver support systems across Europe.
