Maritime and Ports
Maritime-related initiatives are among 39 innovative projects—-dedicated to deploying alternative fuel infrastructure—that have been selected by the European Commission.
A total investment of €422 m, provided through the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), will support these initiatives in driving the transition to cleaner transport.
The selected projects will focus on developing hydrogen refueling stations and onshore power installations in ports as well as electrifying airports and providing infrastructure for alternative fuels such as ammonia and methanol for shipping. They will also focus on installing public electric recharging stations, including high-power megawatt chargers for both heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles.
As explained, the significant investment aligns with the EU’s efforts to decrease greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and strengthen the competitiveness of European industries. The recently published Draghi Report also stressed that scaling up the production of clean fuels and innovative technologies in Europe is crucial to securing EU’s (shipping) competitiveness.
“The 39 projects we are supporting today, will accelerate the deployment of critical recharging and refueling infrastructure needed for our expanding zero-emission fleets. Together, they will add nearly 5,000 new charging points, including 626 mega-watt chargers, helping citizens choose zero-emission vehicles and contribute to a cleaner environment,” Apostolos Tzitzikostas, Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, commented.
AFIF is a key driver of the EU’s efforts to expand alternative fuel supply infrastructure across its trans-European transport network. Its priorities are also aligned with the FuelEU Maritime and the ReFuelEU Aviation regulations, which aim to decarbonize the maritime and aviation sectors.
AFIF operates through a continuous rolling call for proposals, allowing for the regular funding of new and innovative projects throughout the year. The current call, launched on 29 February 2024, has just completed its first evaluation round. The next cut-off will be on 11 June 2025, where the remaining budget of approximately €578 m in funding will be available for successful proposals.
