In response to the Commission’s call for evidence, CLECAT published today its position on the future EU Ports Strategy, outlining freight forwarders’ recommendations for shaping a resilient, competitive, and sustainable future for European ports.
The position paper emphasises the role of ports as critical hubs of international trade and key drivers of economic growth, essential to the EU’s competitiveness, energy transition, and overall resilience. CLECAT calls for a holistic approach to addresses current challenges. The document highlights the growing pressures on port performance and resilience, exacerbated by structural inefficiencies and recent global disruptions. CLECAT therefore calls for policies that enhance transparency, accessibility, and fair competition within the port ecosystem. Key recommendations include the proper enforcement of EU competition rules to ensure open access to port services, further digitalisation and data sharing to improve operational efficiency, and significant investment in transport infrastructure to strengthen hinterland connections. In addition, CLECAT supports the establishment of a robust EU State Aid Framework for ports to strengthen competitiveness and manage the green transition effectively.
CLECAT also underscores the importance of developing sustainability calling for pragmatic measures to accelerate the energy transition, including the deployment of renewable fuels and clean energy infrastructure in ports. The paper also stresses the need for robust security measures to protect against cyber threats and criminal activities, ensuring the safe and secure operation of Europe’s maritime gateways. Finally, CLECAT calls on the Commission to include a strong social and labour component in future EU strategies, developed in close collaboration with social partners and in line with the forthcoming Quality Jobs Roadmap.
