Audi’s plant in Brussels will cease production by 28 February 2025, Audi spokesperson Peter D’hoore said, after the company said no alternatives to closure had been found.
The factory currently builds the Audi Q8 E-tron. Its successor is expected to be produced in Mexico.
“The decision to close the Brussels factory is painful. Personally, it was the toughest decision I have ever had to make in my professional career,” said Audi’s production boss Gerd Walker.
The plant closure had seemed likely after a spokesperson said in November that Audi had been unable to find a buyer for the struggling Brussels plant.
In October 2024, the automaker said it was in talks with a commercial vehicle maker over investing in the plant, while Belgian media reported in the same month that Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio was among those interested in the site.
However, Nio CEO William Li denied that the company had plans to acquire the plant.
